Cessna 172 vs PA-28: Which Should You Buy?
The Classic Rivalry
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk and Piper PA-28 (Cherokee, Warrior, Archer) are the two most popular light aircraft in the world. Both are excellent choices for a first aircraft, but they fly differently and suit different pilots. Let's compare.

Handling
The Cessna 172 is a high-wing aircraft with a stable, forgiving nature. It's the classic trainer — easy to land, excellent visibility downwards, and docile in the stall. The PA-28 is a low-wing design that many pilots find more responsive and sporty. It handles crosswinds well and has a slightly more car-like feel on the ground.
Visibility
The high wing of the 172 gives unobstructed downward visibility — great for sightseeing and navigation. The PA-28's low wing provides better visibility upwards and in turns, which some pilots prefer for circuit work and lookout.
Maintenance and Running Costs
Both types are well-supported in the UK with readily available parts and experienced engineers. Annual costs are broadly similar:
- Annual inspection: £800–£1,500
- Insurance: £1,500–£3,500
- Hangarage: £200–£500/month
The PA-28's landing gear is simpler (no nose strut oleo to service like the 172), which can save on maintenance. The Cessna's flap system is simpler though.
Which Should You Buy?
Choose the Cessna 172 if:
- You want maximum stability and forgiveness
- Downward visibility is important to you
- You plan to use grass strips regularly (higher wing = more propeller clearance)
Choose the PA-28 if:
- You prefer a sportier feel
- You want slightly lower purchase prices
- You like the low-wing aesthetic and handling
Both are excellent aircraft. The best advice? Fly both before you buy and see which one puts a bigger smile on your face.
